Training & Learning
Human resource development lies at the heart of capacity building in post-industrial societies. Tim Cartwright & Associates provides training and learning services using traditional classroom methods, on-the-job (OTJ) procedures, programmed learning, distance learning, coaching and mentoring, and blended approaches using all of these methods.
We operate our own "virtual learning environment" (VLE), which we use for development and course delivery. Materials can be packaged in more than 40 different languages, including all the languages of the European Union, the six official languages of the United Nations, as well as Bahasa, Hindi, Khmer, Tagalog, Thai, Vietnamese, and others.
In general, we can deliver four kinds of e-learning experiences:
- Individual Programmes: These are self-directed, self-paced learning programmes. You can start the programme at any time, you can work on it whenever you like, and you can take as much or as little time as you like to complete it. Individual studies typically consist of: (i) a series of presentations on different aspects of the programme, (ii) additional resource materials (such as readings, case studies, spreadsheets, multimedia, etc.), (iii) various types of quizzes or exercises to help reinforce the key points in what you have learned, and (iv) a glossary of relevant terms. Individual studies do not normally involve interaction with other students or with a tutor.
- Group Programmes: These are similar to individual programmes, except that they include access to a course forum, where you and others who are taking (or have taken) the course can post comments and discuss issues related to the course. Again, you can start the programme at any time, you can work on it whenever you like, and you can take as much or as little time as you like to complete it. Even after you have completed the course, you can (if you like) continue to participate in the course forum as a member of a “community of practice”.
- Tutored Individual Programmes: These are similar to individual programmes, except that they include the services of a personal tutor. For this reason, you may have fixed dates for starting and completing various parts of the programme, although you will still be able to work on the course whenever you like within these deadlines. You are likely to have more extensive individual assignments to complete, on which you will get feedback from your tutor. You may be asked to keep a journal of your thoughts and ideas as the course progresses, and your tutor may provide comments on that, too. You will also be able to “chat” or dialogue with your tutor (and possibly with other students that he/she is tutoring). There may be a major assignment and/or an examination during or at the end of the programme.
- Tutored Group Programmes (or "Virtual Classrooms"): These are similar to tutored individual programmes, except that you are able to interact with other students and you may be required to participate in one or more group activities. For this reason, you will probably have to follow a fairly detailed schedule, including fixed dates and times when you are expected to be have finished certain tasks, to be available for participation in group work, and/or to be on-line. (Of course, we always try to schedule these events so that they are convenient for participants in different cultures and different time-zones.) In addition to a forum and chat/dialogue facilities, there may also be various on-line activities, such as workshops, “wikis”, and other forms of collaboration. There may be a major assignment and/or examination during or at the end of the course.
